Torque motor, what's in there? was created by shighley
Hi All; If a person built a Z1 engine for peak torque at mid RPM ranges, what would the components be? This motor would probably give up HP on the top, but would pull like a tractor in the 4K to 7K range. I'm guessing bigger is better, low compression, mild/stock cams, tiny carburetors and small diameter head pipes and a small collector.
I got to thinking how I actually ride and what I do with the bike and this thought floated to the top. Call me crazy for not wanting max HP. Any advice is sure welcome, thanks and ride safe, Steve

Stroke and compression make torque.

I'll chime in, though I am in no way an authority. From what I have gathered, a big engine (1075cc-price and reliability, 1197cc-max power, hotter running) decent compression, street ported head, mild performance cams with longer duration (Webcam #118), 28mm-29mm carbs would be quite strong through the midrange. Many more experienced people here than me though. Try looking here:

I would first ask you four basic questions:

1)What kind of money are you looking to spend?
2)What kind of fuel are you planning to use?
3)How often do you plan on working on it?
4)What is your skill level?

I'm trying to solve this riddle too.
U have some things right some not so. Bigger is better ,depends on where its bigger.
More CC's and More Compression will raise torque. Smaller carbs will give u a stronger signal (read more throttle responce)than too big. Same with a pipe.Cams , more duration = less compresion (using the same pistons),and more top end.
Smaller ports will be more responsive at lower rpms than a port that is too big.

Whenever you increase the displacement of an engine without increasing it's ability to breath better, it usually doesn't make much more power, but it moves the powerband down the RPM scale.

It becomes a tractor motor and wants to rip your arms off. Riding it, it seem like it has a bunch more power when in fact it doesn't, but is a blast to ride.
