I don't have an impact wrench. Any ideas on how to get the bad boy off? My back doesn't want to hurt any more.

you need a good impact gun with at least 100psi and a clutch basket wrench or it aint coming off.

Thanks for the reply.

I have the clutch tool but buying an impact gun/air compressor isn't realistic at this point.

1/2" to 3/4" breaker bar with a pipe "cheater" might get it loose. Certainly a two person job.

If you have the holder tool the nut should come right off with a socket. I'm not sure how the special tool is set up exactly, as I just built my own, but on mine the holder tool can be installed in a position where the handle is resting against the kickstart shaft. The shaft holds the tool from possibly turning as you focus on the nut. A 1/2" drive socket with a couple foot long pipe on the ratchet handle will remove the nut with very little effort.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Impact drivers are relatively inexpensive and usually on the shelf readily available at most places where tools are sold.

They are also carried by Z1 Enterprises.

If the motor is still in the bike with the chain in place, just put it in gear and have someone apply the rear brake. The shaft won't turn and the nut will come off.

You dont need an impact to remove anything on these bikes. Just go buy a nice 4-foot piece of steel pipe and it will you pay you back over and over again.

Just find the right size socket, chuck it on there with a good ratchet/breaker bar, then slide the pipe over the handle and very easily just turn the nut.

You can use one hand to take off 90ft/lb nuts with ease.

Cheers, and good luck!

I have a 750 Zephyr, essentially a KZ750 engine, the nut is torqued at a gorilla like 90 ft/lbs. Engine is rated at only 42 ft/lbs, at the crank. Additionally in the Zeph is slightly out of round from factory to make it stick.

Theoretically, if you have a long enough leverage you can move the world, and in this case restraining the bike makes it more difficult. If you try long enough with a long enough braker bar you will eventually get it.

However, an impact wrench makes it so easy, 2 secs and no drama. You don't have to buy a pneumatic one, you could get an electric one for about $120. I got a Makita. Worked like a champ. I use for other jobs though, like the sproket nut and the cars also.

OR...take your socket and ask a mechanic at a shop if he would hit it with his gun. Lots of places might do it to help you out. Have a friend who has one?

i would definitly use an impact gun on it there is much less chance of damaging something than using a breaker bar and a snipe or cheater bar as you southern types call them if you use an impact you probably can remove it just by holding the inner with your hand no muss no fuss, the shock from the impact gun will usally knock it off pretty quick. stop by the local small bike shop and flip the guy 5or 10 bucks and he will gladly do it for you.

You guys came through again! Using the leverage ideas ya'll gave me, I used a large wrench to put over the handle of the ratchet to extend its length. It gave me just enough power to get it off.

I will get a piece of pipe for future use though.

Thanks again, ya'll rock!
