My 79 SR650 doesn't upshift from stand-still - 1st & neutral only. Is that by design?

Sorry folks but the answer is still no. I can shift my KZ650C1 down to 1st, up to 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th without even starting the engine. Always could since new. Ed

Ed, your transmission is broke since new  Actually both responses are correct. 1977 KZ650 did not have the neutral finder, 1978 up did. Well documented what the neutral finder is, it makes upshift from first to neutral at a standstill always go to neutral. The output shaft has to be spinning to access second gear on the 1978 up models. 1977 you can shift all the gears at standstill.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

RonKZ650 "1977 KZ650 did not have the neutral finder, 1978 up did."

Ron, Your post made me get off my butt and look in a manual for the 1978 KZ650. You're right, of course, beginning in 1978 the KZ650s have balls in the transmission that fall into grooves in the output shaft (ouch!) when it's not spinning and keep the trans from upshifting.

Geez, what other kind of complicated new fangled gadgets did they put on the new model KZ650s? Next thing you know, they'll be putting on fuel gages and removing the headlight on/off switches and kickstarters. Ed
