Hi,
I'm looking to buy a kawa zl900.
The bike has been sitting for the last 2 years without starting.
The carbs need a good clean up mainly the #4 that dont seem to run.

Done a compression test tonight. Cold motor, all plug out and open throtle.

Result are #1: 160 #2:165 #3:120 #4:150

Put oil in #3 and went up to 175.

Would it be possible that that this is a stuck ring on#3?

I know i would have better number with a hot engine but wasnt set up to have it run for long enough.

Thanks for your opinion.

Fyi, the engine is the "same" as the gpz900

Tks,
Joce

it's bin sitting for a while so once you get it fired up and running for awhile those numbers should come up i wouldn't panic to much besides it is an eliminator it is a very desirable bike for certain collectors so i'd take a chance anyway if is in any kind of decent shape

Pull the sparkplugs and squirt some PB Blaster in the cylinders or some Marvel Mystery Oil. They will loosen up stuck rings.

Those are actually good numbers especially on a bike with 40K miles on her...

Kawi spec is 145 lbs, and bad where if under 100 or where there is a difference between any two cylinders greater than 14 lbs (# 3 cylinder). Same time, this was a cold compression test where once warmed up she may just fall in the same range as the others...

This could be associated with rings or a valve slightly opened/not seating ideally... A leak down test would provide you more info....

I realize you stated it has been sitting... But if possible (charged battery)....

If he can get the bike to start, does the motor even turn over, does it smoke, do you here any Pinging noise from the cylinders (especially # 3), is exhaust header tube (if chromed) for # 3 a different color than the others, does # 3 spark plug look different in color or in carbon build up (oily) etc....

Definitely look inside the gas tank, clean or rusted...

But for now, this seems to be something that can be corrected and should be a rideable bike with some minor tune up work, assuming everything else is in working order such as electrical/lower end gearing...

You can get a running bike for that price... but as you mentioned, GPZ motor who knows... I'd try to jip him down a little on the asking price due to tires, carb work (re-build kits), # 3 cylinder, possible head valve job, possible rust in the tank etc...

Any pictures?

Here is a picture where it was store.

Was inside but not heated.

It hasn'twork since 2 years. This mean it haven't run the last summer 2008. Was on the road before that.

I've check the tank and it's fine.

The bike can start and run but #4 pipe doesn't heat up. The rest are ok.

Carbs#4 is probably in worst condition since the bike wasn't 100% balance (no centerstand) so it's probably stick of old gaz.

I've tried to lower the price but no success.

Those bikes are going around 3,500$ in Canada for a good running condition. Perfect and low millage can go up to 6,000$.

So this leave with a budget of 1,500$ for tune up and paint and searching for missing or broken parts if any.

Holly poopy doo doo.... Gosh darn it oh fiddle sticks, that just sounds so wrong, when will my living hell end...

Oops, I said Hell... My bad...

Heck, even if you had to put a grand into her, the bike looks well taken care of (supremely clean) and to get her running @ $2500 seems a fair price for a nice ride.

Thanks for your help. Will be ny garage Saturday.
I had to sell my KZ1100R so this bike will help my dry my tears. The ELR is the coolest bike ever but an Eli is the sexiest with that big fat rear tire!
