Z1A Crankshaft rebuild questions was created by shighley
Hi All; I intend on sending my crank out for balancing etc. My question is mainly about the bearings. Are they servicable, meaning if a main rolling element is junk, is there a inner race that can be installed? Same question for the rod bearings. I have pulled the end main outer race off before but don't remember seeing a inner race. Maybe the roller rides on parent crank journal? Never seen what the rod set up looks like. Thanks for any input and ride safe, Steve

The inside journal is the crank pin. This can be removed, hard welded, reground, Usually if a bearing roller is broken or shattered, it also takes the rod with it. The bearing is just a cage with rollers in it. I personally have not heard of anyone bothering rebuilding a crank. With the exception of making a good one out of two or more bad ons. Today it is just a easy mater of waiting to see one on eBay. I bought 3 that way.

I'm with Otto, Roller bearing cranks were remarkably stout, In the day.but were/are susceptible to impact/twisting. and after 30 years wear & contamination. can be questionable. Vance & Hines, Falicon, MTC & others offered Magnaflux, balancing, trueing and welding at reasonable prices. Cranks are the hearts of our pets. I for one don't feel comfortable performing more than the most perfuntiotory checks, and strongly rec. sending out to a pro for inspection and welding before launching into a project. My 2 cents G

send it out i have been a motorcycle mechanic for a long time and the only cranks that i ever do is for dirt bikes or small street singles you need a large press and quite afew special tools to do the job right outfits like falicon or fast by gast or millinium in the states or mongoose or adrian bernard in canada do thousnds of cranks every year and they are quite reasonable and this time of year there turnaround is amazing. if you do send it out get the pin's welded if for no other reason than peace of mind
