Drop in cam's for a 74 Z1 900? was created by oldkaws4ever
I searched through the previous post's and didnt find anything, i was wondering if there was a set of performance cam's that i could put in my z1 over the winter? I picked up a wiesco 1075 bore kit for it complete with a bored out kz 1000 jugs and a set of andrew's 2x cam's. Im thinking on just waiting till next year to do the cam's, or will the andrews cams fit in now? Thank's Jim.

The cams on a stock Z1-900 are .320I / .296E lift. any cams up to .380 lift will drop in. There are quite a few available on the market. The 2X Andrews will give you very good power threw the entyre rpm range, and won't kill your gas milage, they are .360/.360 lift. I had these in my Z1-R for a short time before I hopped-up the head. I still have them. You can use these with the stock SOT buckets and stock springs. I do hoever advise polishing out your intake ports. The cams will be much more efficient that way. If you rework your head to at least a stage one spec you will increase the availability of the cams by about 20%. You can come and take a look at my new GPZ head if you want to see what I mean. Mine is finished to a stage 3 spec. My head has been tested to flow 88cfm to your stock 64cfm which is what mine flowed before I ported it. The stock J motor had .354I /.338E, which is what I had in my GPZ this last year. From what you used to have, you should tell a big difference in performance.

Andrews claims that the #2x has adequate, valve to piston clearance with stock pistons. And that stock valve springs are okay. However they do say, that the valve to piston clearance should be checked when using high compassion pistons.

hey buddy you and your cams should be very happy together and those ones should be a straight drop in while you have the valves out you can just sit them in the head and spin them around by hand to double check just to make sure they don't hit the bucket bore and or the ribs in the head now wouldnt be a bad time to grind down the ribs in the head and the crosses in the valve cover any way it wont take long. since you have the head apart anyway i just use a flapper wheel on a die grinder and it cleans them quickly.

Cams are only rather a small part of the answer. HEAD WORK + HEAD WORK + HEAD WORK. You've heard the phrase "location location location" Here it's Headwork. You can get more out of headwork than out of drop in cams. But a little bit of both are absolutely magic.
