Has anyone ever had problems with the sprocket on the crank shearing a tooth or wearing down??

Yep! Cousin did it. Usually it's because something got between the chain and the sprocket and something has to give. Sloopy chain could do it too if it was left loose enough to bang around against the gear long enough. Doesn't happen often and I would guess it's a rarity but it's obviously possible. That's why they make replacements. It happens as you seem to have found out. Any idea why you ran into this?

Is there some way to check the sprocket without splitting the cases? If it is in fact bad then I have a 78Z1000 bored to 73MM for sale and I know the pistons and jugs are worth some coin!!

Or who near NC would split the cases and rebuild for me??

Is there any way to see it from underneath maybe by dropping the oil pan?

I have seen one brake the crank next to the sprocket. But not sprocket damage.

There may be one way but not as good as splitting the cases for 100% confirmations...

You will need to do the following...

Remove tank, valve cover, exhaust and carbs.
Remove cam chain tensioner.
Remove camshafts and head.
Lift off cylinder (maybe not).

Spread the timing chain as much as possible while viewing with flash light down into the lower case...

Take off the ignition cover and with the 17mm larger nut, slowly rotate the crank a couple of teeth at a time... Rotate completely around while seeing if you can find the broken tooth or worse...

You may or may not get lucky
