Cam Chain Guide Replace? was created by Gman
The cam chain guide on my Z1 has wear marks. Does this one need replaced or is this normal? If it needs replaced, what is the best way to get this screw out without stripping the screw head? I'm worried there is probably loctite on the threads. Thanks.

you might be able to get an inpact screwdriver in there...make sure you have the right size phillips,
one good smack should do it....if you are replacing the other stuff, may as well do that one too....

Actually, the screw may come out easier than you think...use a quality screwdriver that fits the phillips head to lessen 'round-out' or, as suggested, an impact driver....and replace every bit of the cam chain tensioning series you can, just to be safe and to take opportunity of the current situation...

As a precaution, you may want to soak some Kroil around that screw for a couple days before trying to remove it. Ed

My thoughts exactly, except I'd use PB blaster and my impact driver. Love that thing....haven't stripped anything since I got it.

Hi. Thought I would give an update in case it is a help to anyone else. I got the screw out yesterday. I bought a Craftsman impact driver but the bits from it were too short to reach. Ended up using a Master Mechanic #3 bit but still had to shim it out in the bit holder so it would reach without interference to the block. Took a lot of pounding to break it loose. Thanks for the suggestions. I get the feeling I will be using the impact driver a lot.

if you have to use it more than once it is a good investment just think of the greif and frustration it all ready has saved you. that tool is always one of the first tools i tell every apprentice i have to buy first because it will get used alot until he figures out other ways of doing things.

Gman, I see little wear there. But if it comforts you, replace. the old "vessel" impact driver is tried & true, and can be used in conjunction w/ 3/8" s extensions to break loose. also, I could be wrong, but believe bottom of that slipper sits in a recess between cyl and cases and requires raising barrels to replace.
