camshaft caps stripped hold down bolt..thread fix?

so i got thru the re-setting of my cams and tensoiner on my1981standard 1000j motor... and on the #3 cam cap the lower left bolt was spun and would not tork(spins)i pulled it out and the thread look to be covered in head material......can i heli coil ???thread insert???what is the fix...don't tell me i need a new head...i mean the bike...thanks guys...where do i purchase the repair stuff what thead pitch should i be getting ect......peace:unsure:

you can heli coil it.

any decent tool supply house or auto parts place will carry them and they come with excellent instructions.by the way that bolt size is 6mm x 1mm thread pitch.

A thread repair can be done by using Heli-Coils,Keen-Serts or the popular Time Serts. All will require drilling to some extent.

sorry to hear...that sucks....when i put mine back together i was bigtime paranoid i would strip one after reading posts on subject...i went with a nice,
firm "snug" with oiled bolts.....so far, so good....good luck man....read up...a lot of posts on the subject.....keith

you know i should know about this ...but like i say i had a twenty year break in wrenching on a z...iremember my mechanic friend would say he knew how tight they needed to be by hand ..and i used to hand torque em too....now i gotta fix one and i think it was spun in there and i did not notice ..on removal....oh well...yeah i saw all the threads when i searched....thanks keithkeith1 wrote:

If there's ONE place on any of the air cooled KZ engines that needs to be torqued properly, the cam caps are it.
Buy yourself a good inch-pound clicker torque wrench and USE IT....especially on places where you have ANY 6mm bolt.
