All, Academic question... I bought This bike under a "distressed sale" Sorry, no pic's. No tank, sidecovers, seat.or exhaust. and crank only rotated @ 30 degrees for @ aft. still, for $100.00 w/title I bit. Speedo indicated 50K miles. Teardown revealed bent valves, worn out cam chain and missing bits. w/cyls/pistons within spec (just)and bottom end clogged w/barely viscous goo. still, trans was good, cl basket fair and oil pump/crank same. So... new valves, fresh seats, rings and hone, cam chain, chicklets tensionor rubber bits, gaskets/seals, and blah blah. compression 120-140 across board, leakdown 2-4%. mostly rings. ign. stock (points) w/29 smoothbores, oval K&N's, and Kerker street exhaust. a summer of riding was pleasant, tho seemed soft.so, prior to launching into jetting/ign. put it on the dyno. Lo, corrected hp is only 72 hp. even w/ sloppy bore, I'd have thought 80, Am I being un realistic? I'm at 5k ft, and temp was @ 40dgrees, EGA #'s @ 3.% idle and @1.50 cruise w@350ppm H/C @ 5k rpm. Thoughts... G

compression is a little off between cylinders ,valves adjusted?other than the numbers being off between cylinders a little that sounds fairly realistic for a basically stock motor with stock head/cams and a loose bore to me anyway.B)

Still recovering, some days are better than others.

at that altitude 72 horse for a stock motor is not bad you lose 3% for every thousand feet of elevation so at sea level your motor would make about 84 horse power. so i don't think your to far off.

P & T, thanks for 'back... Dyno #'s are corrected for alt, so I guess I'm missing @ 10 hp. I'll continue to fiddle, perhaps a comp baffle and drop needles. Thks g

These bikes never made the claimed hp.

72 HP is pretty good actually. You will normally see mid to high 60s on most 900cc models.

Published horsepower numbers were always bhp measured at the crankshaft. Rear wheel horsepower numbers will always be lower.

"Brake horsepower (BHP) is the amount of work generated by a motor without taking into consideration any of the various auxiliary components that may slow down the actual speed of the motor. Sometimes referred to as pure horsepower."

After I dug my 80 1000 out of storage where it had sat for 15 years I had it dynoed. Stock engine with 4-1 Kerker and jets. It made 75hp in TN which was pretty close to sea level. Bike was blowing a good amount of black smoke so I am sure the rings were shot even though it only had 3,000 miles on it. Sitting that long is never good for an engine. I would say 72hp is just about right for your mods and elevation. You might be able to squeeze another 5hp out of it with a carb sync, coil mod, playing with jetting to find right match for your altitude, and mamybe some adjustable cam gears so you can dial the cams in dead on.

Again, thanks for feedback. Trying to build a competitive Hot-rod wasn't my intent. My labors were simply to reproduce a bike I coveted and still regard as one of the prettiest made. The periodic nod's I get from current sportbike riders as they slow in mid-pass is nearly as rewarding as the feeling of acompishment of doing all myself. G
