Top end off, crud fell in, total rebuild? was created by HenryKrinkle
Hey guys, I was dumb and allowed a bit of crud fall into the case as I lifted the block off. I was hoping to just take off the oil pan and shake upside down/flush out the debris with carb cleaner or something; back through the top. Would that be safe, or must I take the whole damn thing apart now?
What is advisable at this point?

Thanks

I'd do what Mark says. Drop the pan and see what rinses out. Do a quick oil/filter change when you get it running again. ;)

If it was just mud/dirt/grime I wouldn't even bother with it unless it was half a pound of it.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

like plummen said what motor is it. if it's a roller bearing crank it shouldn't be a big prob. but if its a plain bearing motor they really don't like mung it might not be a bad idea to pull it down just to make sure. for piece of mind if no other reason.

I would recommend what I would do anyway:

drop the pan, it gives you a chance to clean the slime layer off the bottom.

Use carb cleaner spray upwards around the bottom end to get any sludge off.

I removed the oil pump before I did this because I wanted to replace the O ring seal on the pump with a new one.

you can look at my bottom end pictures in the thread and kinda see how much access you will have. With that oil pump screen I dont think much crud would ever get picked up.

heh heh heh,...coming from a guy who makes frequent stops at gas-stations,to collect the used kitty-litter for his underwear...(nothin like skid-marks and oil,eh Don)

Seriously though...like asked...define "Crud"...

Was it schmag?(crumpet-droppings that fell from your beard)...

Maybe it was snackage?(boogers that fell from your moustache)...

Could be,maybe you farted out of excitement, and something flew out of your pant-leg,and ended up in the engine?(that's not a fart...that's a "Shart",mmmmkayyyy...)

What did you drop in there?

And yes...drop the pan when in doubt...it's only time,bolts and gaskets(and $)...and piece of mind(become one with you're bottom-end:huh: )

Was it gasket material...or was it something metal?

Was it a socket?...or something bigger...the handlebars?

Do you have a retractable, extendable magnet?(got time for fishing?)
Lots of light, and a magnet...don't expect to get lucky right away(speaking from experience)...if you don't like what fell in there, there's a reason.
Before you do the "Tear-down"...stop and think about it...don't rush it!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...throw the phone across the street(not needed, trade it for an owners manual for your breed of bike)...feed all pets and kids, and tell them all to go play in the snow...tell the Warden you love her...give her some money, and tell her to go gamble and have fun...

Now...LOCK THE DOORS!!

Bring the bike into the living-room... grab the pillows and blankets from your bed,to support the bike (divorce is only a word, and you're better than that)...

Now it's nap-time,mmmmkaayyyyyy
Turn the T.V.on and put it on the "Speed" channel...

Lay down beside your bike and lock your fingers into the spokes of the rear wheel(handcuffs help)

You're in good hands B)

It's '78 650 - Less than a shotglass-worth of old oily dirt/sand gunk fell in. (had built up around the bottom of the block)
I was planning on taking pulling the oil pan and cleaning already. I also have a new oil filter and 5 quarts of good oil (only needs 4).
I will pull the pan and spray the crap out of it with some carb cleaner.
Thanks guys...
