Z1-900 valve cover on a 1979 kz 1000 head? was created by oldkaws4ever
Ok, after all you guys told me not to go with the gpz head, im glad i didnt, i found a low millage head off of a 79 ltd 1000, my question is, will my z1 valve cover bolt onto it? Or do i need the 79 kz 1000 valve cover? Thanks, Jim

you can tap the smog ports and put pipe plugs in the top, then you can use the old style cover ;)

The cam plugs may or may not work as the GPZ head has bolts that go through the cam plugs.

Also.... you have to be careful which top idler assembly you use. The earlier valve covers are different in the center area. The later KZ1000 verion has little 'blisters' on either side of the top idler assembly to allow clearance for the KZ1000 version of the assembly.

I used a 1000 chain roller and I think all I did was grind the cover and may be had to lower the tower down a little, but it wasn't much to get it to fit. Put the cover on without the gasket and MAKITFIT! Yeahh!
