I know there are easier ways: 1000 shims (cam out)

I am away from my tools, have 2 business days to locate 1000 shims in the KC area, no time to wait on ordering a KZ shim tool.

The question is, as long as I play by the one cam out rule, keeping tension on at all times per the directions I read here earlier, what is stopping me from taking the cams out to swap out shims? I need to do 5 as it is, so I thought that using the tool would not save that much time anyway.

Thanks

And if you are in KC and want to swap shims before the new year, i am here for you!

I don't see anything wrong with that. Just check out the cam timing before you start it.

And would review postings about how to minimize chances of stripping threads on cam cap bolts.

im not close to where mine is but the wedge to hold the bucket down is just a piece of steel with an angle ground in it to fit between camshaft and edge of bucket, the pry tool is basically a heavy screwdriver with a hook bent at the right angle in the shank.heat up the shank of a reasonably short screwdriver with a heavy blade on it put a little bit of a bend in it then toss it in a bucket of oil,or a bucket of salt water to put some temper back into it.get a small diameter piece of stainless rod with points ground on each end with one end bent to a 90 degree angle and the other end straight to use for prying stubborn ones loose.magnet can be bought at any hardware store.what can i say,we're simple folks here in nebraska, coming from a long line of blacksmiths doesnt hurt either!
