My mighty 74 Z1 engine is getting some love was created by oldkaws4ever
Ok, i got my butt motivated yesterday and started dissasembly of the z1 because it got up to the mid 50's here.

My next thing to do is take the engine out of the frame and go through it really good. The P.O., my uncle snapped 3 bolts off at the head were the exhaust collars attach, this wouldnt be such a huge problem but he thought he would drill them out and retap the hole.......well that didnt work to well cause he had a really dull drill bit and wasnt even centerd at all. So there is no meat to tap into. What i wanna know, am i tottaly screwed on using the original head? I am really thinking about getting another head from a 900, and putting my valves in and such, new valve seals of coarse. I would be outside in my garage now pulling the head off, but it is 6 degrees out and i dont have a space heater....lol However i will try and snap some pics to show the damage in a fw minutes to help you guys give me a few pointers or ideas.....thanks, jim

The only way I'd reuse is to drill out a bigger hole, thread in an insert, then tap that insert. You'd need a good machine shop to do it. Thats not having seen it tho.

if you can get the stud out thats cool if you end up breaking that boss it is not that big of a deal just take it to a welding shop that can do alluimium and they can build it up for you and then you can start from scratch again not the end of the world.

Your best bet is to send the complete head, cams etc to joe hooper down in Florida. Bosses will be welded up drilled tap and new studs installed. Joe has made a living on kawasaki's. It wil be done right. I think he charges about $50 a stud. Plus He will do three angle valve job,new seals. lap valves new guides whatever you need. Head will be shimmed ready to bolt on when returned.
Or you can find a decent head on ebay and hope it's not AFU
here is a poor photo of Joe's work. a broke off exhaust boss that had to be rewelded and tapped. fine job.
