sitting 9 years engine oxidised covers??? was created by trianglelaguna
i'm working on a rebuild for the jugs on a siezed motor and once in a while i use some brite boy chrome cleaner on a removed cover or housing spot or to see whats under the weatherd cases, covers etc..
It really looks like this motor was smooth and (low miles???)and clean before being left,, becuase of the lack of scratches and pefect surfaces i'm finding...the problem is polishing the nooks and crannies..
I was wondering if there are any products that work like the old tarnex commercials, somthing that i can dip or brush on to conteract the ox.
This man had chromed alot of stuff too,and if i'm not careful i'm ending up with faint swirl marks from my rags that need to be rubbed out ALOT...
peace craig.
I had thought originaly about plugging all the holes and having it sand/bead blasted..but it is soooo smooth underneath it all now,not wanting to screw up and all

A member (Old Man Rock) a few weeks? months ago? did an article on polishing engine covers. It is probably in the library of past posts.

What about the oil level glass hole? Mine looks like it has a little oil stuck behind it. Can it be removed and cleaned?

Chrome is a "really" hard metal, and it's used on wear surfaces such as parts of hydraulic cylinders for just that reason. If you're scratching it or leaving swirl marks with rags, then it's not chrome, polished aluminum maybe, but not chrome.

the plating on hydraulic cylinders is called hard chroming it goes on thick and can actually be machined unlike regular chrome plating which scratches when exposedto abrasive materials.;)hard chrome plating used to be usedto build up crankshafts back in the day for various purposes

'Hard chrome' is not really harder than other chrome plating, it is called hard chromium because it is thick enough that a hardness measurement can be performed on it, whereas decorative chrome plating is only millionths of an inch thick and will break like an eggshell if a hardness test is conducted, so its hardness can't really be measured directly.

Nerve racking to pull and replace the seal but possible.
