Cylinder Head Bolts was created by jmargrav
Well I was putting my bike back together this weekend and when tightening down my head I snapped the head bolt. It was not one of the nuts that go on the studs, but one of the two head bolts. This is not the first time I have done this, yea I know should have learned my lesson, but I didn’t.
Now the manual I have says to torque them down to 22 ft lbs. But I only had my torque wrench at 10 ft lbs and they still snapped! So I was able to get the broken bolt out of the head without removing the head, but what should I be tightening these head bolts to. I did a search and found some people recommending 6 ft lbs, just to be sure, is 6 ft lbs enough? Too much?

if they are the 6mm bolts on the end of head use no more than 7.5lbs of torque.

My 750 has three small 10mm bolts that go up from below into thre head and they look a lot more sturdy than the ones pictured. My manual specs those to torque at about 8 ft-lbs.

Yes the manuals are sadly mistaken on torque for that bolt.

Well I will have to be more carful the next time, I guess the bolts just have to hold back some oil, well thanks for confirming my suspicions.
