How To Fix cam Drive Leak? was created by bountyhunter
There is not a single word in the FSM for the 1979 KZ750 twin about the tach drive. I remember it just pushes out by finger once the head is disassembled.

Are there O rings in there that have to be replaced to stop it from leaking?

Any repair kits available?

Anybody know how the O rings come out and go in?

Crap! I just looked at the explosion drawing for the assembly courtesy babbittsonline.com and I think I have a part missing?

They show a tach gear gasket and an oil seal I don't remember seeing.... the machine shop took the drive gear out and replaced it after the hot tanked the head. Does the gasket and seal stay captive in the guide when you pop the gear in and out? Those chemicals may have eaten them alive....

The seal is part of the main body of the drive, has to be pried out with a little pick. The oring seals the body to the head. The gasket is always missing because first time the tach cable is removed it is not noticed and lost. It looks like the seal and gasket is the same as all the other more common KZ650s and 1000s, but the oring is different, but both are 10mm. My guess is you buy the kit for the KZ1000 it would fix a 750. You can buy this stuff at Z1 ent I'm sure. You can make your own gasket out of thin cardboard.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I read the whole thread and it didn't tell me what's up with the invisible gasket or how to change the seal. This does:

Thanks for the info, that's exactly what I needed to know.
