1984 GPZ 750 start problumb was created by teddy1177
I am working on my 84 GPZ 750 to start with starter is OK and starter gear in the case looks OK but when you hit the start button it makes a noise like something is slipping and once in a while it will engage and turn the motor and then quickley release. Is there another gear or something in the clutch plate area that may be broken or a c clip that may have come off?If you know what it may be let me know.Thank's Tim.

The over running clutch has springs and rollers that might need replacing. On the larger(and maybe yours)KZ's it sits behind the magnet for the alternator on the left side of the engine on the end of the crank.
A roller may have developed a flat spot or weak springs. Try www.z1enterprises.com and see if they can help.

starter clutch in the smaller four is inside the engine not under the rotor.

84 GPZ750. Modded with stock Kawasaki parts: ZR-7 shock, ZX-6 coils, GPZ1100 throttle, EN454 brake, GPZ900 fuse box, etc. and non stock: Ken Sears mirrors, K&N filter, Pirelli Sport Demons.

But it could still be the starter: mine was. Take out the starter and look for the engaging gear inside the motor. IF it only spins one way and not the other and smoothly across a few rotations, checking for reverse travel over as many places as you can, then the starter is LIKELY to be the fault.
I'm running a 2002 ZR-7 starter w/ no problems, so if you see one cheaper from the ZR-7 then snag it up: it is the same motor. So is all of the aircooled Kawasaki 750 4's. The 650 is close enough that I would try it too.
