As you sit on the bike the left coil fires the #1 and #4 sparkplugs at the same time and the right coil fires #2 and #3. Sparkplugs are numbered from left to right sitting on the seat.

This type of ignition is considered a "wasted Spark" as it is fired during an exhaust stroke.

In January 1994 the advancer changed to 20 degrees BTDC @ 1500 rpm from the previous 5 degrees.

Early advancer. Note close distance between F and T marks.

Later advancer. Note further distance between F and T marks.

Why not just set timing at idle rpm by aligning the F mark with permanent timing mark on engine case?

Good Luck! :)

Info from Z1E website:

If you have a 73 Z1 or an early 74 Z1A, we may need to supply a different crank rotor. Up through engine number Z1F-32817 kawasaki installed a 5/40 degree mechanical advancer (normal fire mark is 5 degrees then advancing to 40 degrees). If you have one of these on your engine, please enter a note in the special instructions to replace the standard rotor (3 rotor) in the Dyna-S with one special for these early bikes (3A rotor).)

Interpreted to mean that different rotors are needed for using a Dyna-S, depending on which advancer is fitted.

From your post, I am wondering if maybe the wrong Dyna-S rotor is fitted.

Sorry, I don't know how to visually tell the difference between the two separate Dyna-S rotors, or whether a Dyna-S rotor/advancer "misfit" may be finessed by simply re-setting the timing at idle rpm (thinking probably not, as it would also change the higher rpm advance from the desired 40 degrees BTDC.)

But am thinking the later advancer would be a direct swap replacement, as an option for using the "standard" Dyna-S rotor.

Good Luck! :)
