i'm pretty sure if you pull the starter and block the starter drive hole with a starter block off plug that ape sells and remove the starter cable running from the solinoid to the starter but leave the one going from battery to the solinoid as that is your main power supply for the bike.i take of all my starters on all my 900 and 1000s except for my j. if you get ambitous later than you can take the starter drive out of the cover but don't worry about it as it can't go anywhere.
