4 into 2, 4 into 1?
01 Nov 2008 22:02
Can someone be so kind as to explain the reasons why I would choose one exhaust over the other? 4 into 2, or 4 into 1 exhaust systems? and maybe a recommendation.
I plan on running a more or less stock motor and doing recreational road riding on a 79-1000 LTD. The original stock exhaust system is pretty ratty looking and has numerous dents in the underside, time for a new one I think.
Thanks,
Dman

4-1 is what i would suggest. Simpler, easier to deal with/put on and take off, and is more performance oriented. May have to consider a little rejetting if you go this route though.

With a 4 into 1 you save wieght over the stock exhaust, and your cornering clearence is improved with some exhausts. Like jordan said you may have to rejet with the 4 into 1.
With a 4 into 2 it will keep the dual muffler look, and probally wont have to rejet, It really depends ony your taste, and what you like the look of. Are you looking for, Sound? Power? Or both?

Is there a difference in sound with one or the other? I have not had any bike over a 650 thumper so this one in stock form is plenty of power and performance for me, not particularly a speed demon either. so the stock exhaust is fine just need to buy a new one anyway was wondering what the differences were. I am getting the carbs rebuilt anyway so a rejet would not be a big deal.

Form what I understand (and my own bike): a well designed 4 - 2 will give better low end pull if it employs the crossover pipe in front of the mufflers. A good 4-1 will give a little more power in the mid/upper revs but youmay have to rejet to get it.Is there a difference in sound with one or the other?
