i just bought an '80 kz1000ltd and it drove fine yesterday and now it will go into first and neutral but will not go into 2nd or any higher gear. any insights? thanks.

If it's on the stand, take it off and ride it. Kawasakis have a "positive neutral finder" that prevent you selecting any gears other than 1st or neutral if you are not moving.

yes the bike has to be moving in order to get it into the higher gears.

Well, at least the rear wheel has to be spinning to get it above neutral. You can do it on the center stand. With the bike in neutral, give the rear wheel a stout spin. It should be able to be shifted into 2nd on up at that point.
