Preferred clearances? was created by sbulla
Got my cam cap bolt hole repaired and took my measurements tonight. One gap was smaller than my thinnest feeler gage but, the bucket will spin so there's some clearance.

Is there a preferred clearance for these or is anywhere in the .05 to .15mm spec OK?

What would you guys recommend with these measurements...

1980 KZ1000LTD B4
1 intake-.051mm
2 intake-.102mm
3 intake-.102mm
4 intake-(less than) .038mm

1 exhaust-.127mm
2 exhaust-.076mm
3 exhaust-.076mm
4 exhaust-.127mm

sbulla i would go down 2 sizes on no.4 and 1 size on no.1 that should get you pretty close to the middle of the range which is where you want to be and 1 size on both 2 and 3 on the exhaust. i know they are both in spec. but it is always better to run the exhaust a bit on the loose side on street motors because of carbon build-ups on the valve seats and since you are already in there it is easy to do now.on my own motors i normally run .004" on the intake and.006" on the exhaust but that is the way i've been doing it for years. the stock kawi clearances close enough for the street. good luck and don't hesitate to ask me if you need more assistance. by the way nice to hear that the operation was a success doctor. some times doing heli coils in a head that is attached to a motor can be tense. i learned some thing with this thou ill be trying that foil over the head to keep the chips down for sure never thought to do it before thats one of those things that you hear and go doooooh.

The clearance specs for my 750 are 0.5 - 1.0 mm (.002" - .004" ). I set them at .003" - .005". A shade wide hurts nothing, too tight and the valve seat is toast.

Valves usually get tighter over time after a valve job, so set to the upper limit of the range if you have a shim to get it there.

BTW: I agree exhaust valves are safer if run a shade wider than intake. They get hotter and expand more linearly, so (IMHO) you don't want to set them at the lower limit of the range.

As listed above. .004" intake and .006" exhaust is used for a whole lot of engines and gives a bit more headroom. Going a shade wide may give up a tiny bit of peak HP by altering the cam timing and lift very slightly, but you will never feel the difference.

OK, just to double check my math...

I checked all the shims for size and have them listed below along with the ones I need to order. Take a look and reassure me I'm on the right path. I figure I only need one 280 and 2 270's.

Thanks for the replies,
Sonny
