Exhaust Half Collars @ Z1? was created by Old Man Rock
Hey all, & Jeff...

I can pick these up at Red line but since I need to order some other stuff at Z1, was wondering if they offered a kit of these as well (or individually) but I can't seem to find at Z1...

Anyone know?

Thanks,

OMR

We don't routinely stock them as 1) they are expensive, and 2) unlike what the redline ad says, they don't work with many aftermarket pipes.

The problem with V&H (and other brand aftermarket pipes) is the lip on the header pipe that sits in the exhaust port is far thinner than on the factory pipes. Because of this, V&H and others provide slightly longer split collars - usually about 1/8" longer. If you use the factory collars with V&H pipes, the exhaust flange will bottom against the head before totally sealing the copper exhaust gasket into the port.

We can get them in, our price is around $4.60 each

Kerker changed manufacturing on the pipes over the years. You might want to look at the thickness of the lip on header pipes on your exhaust.

Original Kawasaki pipes, the lip thickness is around 3mm. On V&H, they are around 1.5mm thick. I remember on some of the Kerker pipes them being decent thickness, but with Kerker now being owned by Supertrapp they changed the manufacturing processes.

If you ever run into a situation where the exhaust flange bottoms out on the head before totally sealing the exhaust gasket, there are thicker exhaust gaskets available.

www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=1602 These are about 2mm thicker than stock exhaust gaskets and they overcome the lip thinness issue. You don't want to routinely go with them unless you do have a problem - otherwise you can't get the nut started on the stud...

Obviously I prefer as well to have one exhaust gasket the correct thickness but I do have to ask for knowledge and educating my mind...

How much is lost in doubling up the gaskets if required?

No wonder this bike didn't have collars when I got it... Other than being a 30 year old POS that is... Really crappy after market pipes.

Ok, digging a little deeper in this I find that the 1976 KZ900, 1973-75 Z1 series, 1977-1980 KZ1000, KZ1000 LTD 1977-1980, have the same split collar part OEM numbers.
SKU: 92027-170 INSERT,EXHAUST PIPE

With this in mind, for those that have installed Kerker 4-1 Meg series pipes on their bikes, did you guys use the collars, thicker/double copper gaskets or something else?

Glad I looked into this, maybe just saved myself $42.

Thanks all,

Then the genuine OEM collars are required (if I followed correctly).

Seems that is what Redline is offering... $42 for the set...

Appreciated Plummen but I don't know other than OEM part numbers what the measurements would be for this bike didn't have any on it.

Then throw into the mix my head (KZ head damn it ) has been shipped to Larry C so I can't even do any measurements. Poor OMR. :(

Same time, seems the OEM is what everyone had to use with the KZ1000 exhaust flanges. I'll probably just wait till I get the head back, installed and then test for measurements.

Thanks bud!
