89 750 engine - non interference? was created by franknsr
I just picked up a 80 ninja 750 frame and engine off ebay because I need some parts for yet another project. This bike was performing a wheelie when it locked up. Good for me because I need tranny parts.
I pulled the valve cover off and found an adjuster came loose and jammed then broke the timing chain. When I pulled the head I expected to find massive carnage, bent valves and the like but no. Everything looks great.
Does anyone know if this a non interference engine? It looks so good I’m considering replacing the timing chain and using the whole thing.

I have no idea if it's a non-interference motor, but you're in an ideal position to determine if it is.
There are two possible forms of interference, valve to valve and valve to piston, so bolt the head back on it, rotate the intake cam until a valve is fully open, then rotate the crank. If nothing hits, rotate the exhaust cam till the exhaust valve in the same cylinder is wide open, then rotate the crank again.
If nothing hits after doing all the above, then you have a non-interference motor

Only in my mind. I meant 1989, but the "0" is a little to close to the "9" on the laptop for my fat little fingers.
