Engine turns over hard when hot, any ideas?

I usually don't start my bike when its warm because I have been pretty much just been riding it to work. Well today i took it on some errands and at the last stop when i tried starting it the engine was having a very hard time turning over. After a couple of tries it did start and ran fine. The battery was new this past spring so I think it is fine. Do i have a weak starter? Why only when the engine is hot?

I would check all your wire connections, and timing.

sounds like you have too much advance in the timing. check your timing and make sure your advancer is working springs not broke or stuck.

check the levels in your battery over time wet cell batterys will lose fluid due to evaporation and older kawi charging systems have been known to to overcharge a bit any time you have an problem like this always verify the battery is up to proper voltage before looking for other problems.

And if not already done, would also measure specific gravity (little floating balls test) and load test the battery.

If these were real short trips, and if you spent the entire time in stop and go city traffic, then it's possible the bike got hot enough to cause the pistons to drag on the cylinder walls.

I'd check everything else first though.

You MAY have a starter that's reaching the end of its life cycle. If everything else checks out okay (including the solenoid) and there's no corrosion on either end of the big wire from the solenoid to the starter itself then I'd pull the starter and disassemble it to check the brushes and the commutator. They WILL wear out eventually.....

I took the battery out and checked the fluid level, they all look good. I put the battery on the charger for a little while and cleaned the connections real good. I will see how it goes this week.

When i get some more time i will check the timing and advancer.

This would include the connection where the negative battery cable attaches to the engine or frame.
