I'm not sure but may be due to displacement or timing differences in the engines.

The earlier Z1s had a different advance curve than do the KZ900s and later KZ1000s. Why? Who knows. I think this has come up when discussing the Dyna S ignition as they have two different rotors to accomodate the use of either mechanical advance.

the first advancers on the Z1's went from 5 degrees advance to 40 degrees advance. This caused (together with the early carb) the bike to have a very rough idle. In mid production 1974 Kawasaki switched the advancer to a 20/40 unit to give a smooth idle. Complementing this change were changes to the carbs to help smooth the idle and transition off idle.

The 20/40 advancer is an easier one to live with...
