Why is there a hole in the #1 piston? was created by Gman
I have a '75 Z1 motor from a parts bike that I planned to re-ring and use in a project bike. When I pulled the cylinder I found the #1 piston has a hole machined in the side and a corresponding hole in the #1 sleeve. None of the other pistons or sleeves have this hole. Can anyone tell me the purpose of these holes and whether it ok to re-use these parts? Thanks.

Possibly the engine came this way from the factory due to a machining error or an oil control problem. I'd ask at the engine rebuilders as I'd never seen that before.

I dont have an answer for you. Sorry . Just more questions.
That is a new one for me.
Is the hole in the sleeve below the block ?
Do the rings go down as far as the hole in the sleeve while running?

Sorry to bother everyone, I feel like an idiot. After I looked at it closer with my glasses on I see that it goes all the way through the block. Like someone sabotaged the motor by drilling a hole through it from the outside. Pretty much ruined that set of block and pistons. Makes me wonder what else may have been done to the engine. It was on a parts bike I bought as is. So it goes.

All the way through? Seems like it would have had to go through the connecting rod as well.

Here's a pic of the offending hole from the outside. Plummen, I'm sure it can be fixed with a new sleeve and piston if I want to go that route. Complete stock 903 jugs and pistons can be had pretty reasonable so I don't it it's worth messing with. I have a 1015 10.25:1 kit I can drop on it so no big deal. I was just leaning towards a motor that runs on reg gas.

You can run 10>25:1 pistons on premium pump gas.
