Cyl head damage, what to do ? was created by Big Fluff
Hi all.
A previous owner had by the look of things, run too long a bolt into the cam retainer cap and popped part of the casting off from the underside of the cylinder head. :(
What would you use to repair this
I've tried JB weld (stick type, metal putty) bit that doesn't seem to adhere to the alloy very well and it still leaks oil out.
It's too difficult to apply anything 'runny' as gravity is against you...

not sure of the bike its on, but I would look for another head, you could pull the head off and have it welded, but I think in the long run you can replce the head cheaper

I don't know why the JB Weld would not work, maybe the head was not clean enough to let it grab?

If it were me, (just because I'm a tightwad), I would try it again before buying a head or sending it out for welding repair.

I would pull the bolt out and clean the area very good with Acetone or brake cleaner.

Then coat the bolt with paste wax or Vaseline, and insert the bolt.

Then use the two-tube JB Weld and mix it up. Don't use the putty stick epoxy.

Apply it to the area with a popsicle stick and maybe then apply a piece of duct tape to the head, to create a mold around the repair. I don't know if the epoxy will adhere to the tape, so I would smear a small bit of vaseline on the tape that touches the epoxy.

After it dries and to insure the repair stays in place I would remove the bolt and grind it down a few threads shorter.

If it didn't work after this then I would try the machine shop or a used head.

JB Weld should stick, my 750 suffered damage to the engine case behind the ignition cover. After a good cleaning with brake cleaner I had no problem getting the JB Weld to stick to the case and stay there.
