last night while I was riding home from work on my 76 kz750, my clutch cable snapped. somehow I got the thing home, even through a traffic jam. It was the worst ride I've ever had to make, but did make me more confident in my skills.

The problem I'm having is, I found the replacemen cable at z1. However, apparently the little adjusting screw/bolt (don't really know what to call it) on the handle somehow flew off on the expressway when it happened. Anybody have any idea where I can get a new one, or even what it is called so I can Google it?
This is my primary vehicle right now, so I'm pretty much screwed until I can get it fixed.

That part is simply called a cable adjuster or slack adjuster.Any shop Z1 ent, Kaw dealer , Or indy shop should be able to match one up for you. Jonnybiker

Thats a problem I know all to well. I was able to get one at a kawi dealer. Mine broke late one sat afternoon in the middle of a 2 week tour in far east Quebec. I had to ride another 1000 KM with vice grips as my lever. Good luck

AAARRRRRGGGHHHH!!!

Mine just broke tonight! Cracked back into gear right behind a minivan as I just came to a stop! Freaky!! Had to let as much slack as possible, then vice grip the slack to the handle to get home!

Sucks... I'm getting 2 on wednesday from Z1 since I'm only 2 hrs away.

Screw the riding with vice grips! Its damn nerve racking! I'll never be without a spare again.

WTF is going on here....?

My clutch cable on my 76 750b1 just broke Monday Night as well.

Ordered a replacement from Z1.

Luckily I had just left the house and only had to push it back 4 blocks.

Do certain phases of the moon cause clutch cables to snap all at the same time or something?

do like i do, i always have at least 2 in my race trailer [i lost in the final round one time because mine broke when i was pushing the bike down to the staging lanes if i had another one i could have changed it in about 3 mins] when ever i take a long trip i carry an extra clutch and throttle cable with me i have 7 bikes that take all the same cables so i always have some around i use motion pro cables if you using a superbike bar or a drag bar these numbers should work for most big kawi's with smoothbores or stock carbs use 31-3001 for your throttle cable they are the same for both. for the clutch use 36-3002 if you have higher bars use 36-3006 and for the throttle cables use
use 31-3019. also when ever i do an oil change i pull the cables and lube them.

mAKE SURE YOU INSPECT YOUR CABLES AND LUBE THEM UP FROM TIME TO TIME.

YOU SHOULD ALL BE DOING A WALK AROUND AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH TO CHECK FOR ABNORMALITIES AND FREYED CABLES.
USUALLY THE CABLES WILL BEHAVE SUSPICIOULSY BEFORE THEY COMPLETELY BREAK.

LUBE UP THOSE CABLES AND THEY WILL LAST A LOT LONGER.

tHEY ALWAYS BREAK AT THE HANDLE.

Hey mine's about to brake too. I had to adjust out the slack three times on the way home but I made it before it snapped.

So is there a way to tell if the cable is about to break?

Mine was adjusted to about 2-3 mm clearance at the lever, but lately it has increased to about 4 mm. I thought as the clutch plates wear, that the slack would be less. I cannot see any freying of the cable near the handlebar lever, but I worry that the cable may be stretching or about to break. I lubricated the cable very well a year ago.

Any advice? Thanks.
