headache! chain rubbing was created by Knight Rider
1075 410 cams. stock head but has hd springs

took the head off and the chain was rubbing on the intake side on the bottom by the idler, was making noise like it was a shim problem but found this ...... why is it happpening? chain stretch, idler wear, whats up,have a new head i want to put on,should i get a new chain? if so is a master link system the way to go,dont want to crack the case. i am ambitiously lazy.

i would guess a stretched chain or a busted component or severely worn component..as far as i know
no master link, going to have to do a tear down...
others might know more........good luck....

Sounds like the tensioner is bad. You can replace the chain with a master link unit. Try to measure the old one first. Should tear it down to the block and replace all the little parts while your in there.

Yes you can use a riveted style timing chain,so you don't have to split the cases.
Take a look at part #10 in the pic.
A LOT of times, these guides will let go.

And Don...do your frikken laundry!

You might want to pull the pan(get a new gasket)and see what's laying in there.

KNIGHT RIDER you might be lazy but replacing the cam chain is really your best option, if the cam chain is worn out that bad or your idlers are either worn or broken just imagine how much damage could occur if the chain let go. i've broken master links on drive chain before saw what gets messed up on the outside can you imagine what would happen inside if the cam chain let go. besides winter is coming good time to pull it down and do it right.remember the old saying there is always time to do it right never time to do it over. good luck with your problem.
