use one piece head gasket instead of two piece? was created by 531blackbanshee
on my 1980 z1r 1000 i am blowing oil out between the head and cylinders in the front center.i was thinking about using the one piece head gasket in place of the two piece that was originaly on there.is there any reason why i should,or should not do it?has anyone ever used one in place of the other?if so why,and how did it work?

I have, worked just fine for the last 10 years. I used "The Right Stuff" silicone around the center, no problems or leaks yet. I believe it was a Cometic gasket. Ive seen copper ones used too.

I currently use the one piece, no problems.
Just don't use the o-ring.
I used Hi-temp gasket sealant, works fine.

We used to fill the o ring groove with epoxy and be done with it. Gaskacinch and 1211 for sealant, no leaks.

ditto.the copper gaskets should only be used on motors with o-ringed sleeves or else they leak

you actually o-ring the block around the sleeve.

i have ordered the copper head gasket.

plummen- do you know for a fact that it will leak without o-rings even with the 1211 and an overnight cure?
i appreciate the replies and any insight that can be added.

top of sleeve recieves the o-ring.only time ive used the copper head gaskets has been on high compression motors(13:1 or so)and turbo motors .on my 1st 1170 i built back when they were considered a big motor  i didnt listen to the old guy who did the machine work and ran copper gasket without o ringing and it leaked like a sieve!since then ive always had my sleeves cut for o-rings on any high end stuff where i use copper gaskets without a leak, ido spray them down with copper coat also before installing;)okay its actually the area where sleeve and cylinder meet,i still consider it to be the sleeve!
