77 KZ-750 ~10k original miles and a few tweaks
New mac exhaust system "HTS" paint cracking was created by krazykat
I have less than 50 miles on a mac HTS with chrome muffler exhaust and the coating on the headers is already starting to go. It's cracking at the top of the down pipes near the head.
Anyone else experience this? I've contacted mac and am waiting for a response. They had to make the exhaust up when i ordered it because it wasn't in stock, so maybe the coating wasn't properly cured or didn't have time to dry/set up...?
I guess I should have gone all chrome. I'm suspecting they're going to tell me it's my fault or the bike's fault. If that happens there is a coating place near me that I've had work done by and they could do it for pretty cheap. Their turbo-x coating has withstood 2k miles on a turbo rotary, so I don't think a KZ will be much of a challenge for it.

Just to update: I received a UPS tracking number from MAC today, so I guess they're sending a replacement header set.

KZ-750 twin
I like it other than the paint issue. It's a little raspy. I'm going to fix that with some stainless steel wool packing.
The only thing I don't like is that it partially blocks the oil drain... Maybe it just needs a little adjustment, since it's slip joint construction.

Yep, but I'd get the 2-2 chrome if I did it again as it's not much more and looks cleaner IMO. I just got the chrome replacement pipe today. Looks good.
I'll get some pics this weekend.

i got a 4-1 mac exhaust in all black -- after the first ride the paint was cracking and it started rusting .. now i've removed rust and re-sprayed it with rattle can heat resistant paint. . . hopefully that will work better

I'd try curing it in moderate heat for a while. I've heard it needs to be baked/cured to hold up well.
I've heard there is some stuff you canget in a rattle can that you actually cure with a propane or mapp gas torch after it has air dried. Works well on turbos and downpipes.
In the end, you get what you pay for.

Paint the INSIDE of the pipe with Hi Temp paint .
Grab the top off of something like WD40 with the tube on it and spray in as far as you can .(use with the paint)
Black ,,NO cracking ,,
Chrome ,,NO bluing ,,
It works
