Maybe it's a sandwich of copper and fiber listed as a two piece gasket. Contact www.z1enterprises.com they will tell you all about gaskets for your bike.

I have never seen a two piece head gasket. The good ones have two layers of copper on the outside with a softer material inside, but the layers are all hooked together. If the copper layers broke apart it would look like a two piece gasket.

If you check the first picture in THIS thread you can see the two piece head gasket and associated o ring. The problem, if it is a problem with the one piece gasket is you have to fill the grove that the o ring goes in with something. I don't think you can get a two piece gasket for oversized cylinders. Or so I 've heard.

The o.e.m. head gaskets for all the 4 cyl. kz's I've seen are 2 piece. Aftermarket head gaskets, specifically those used with oversize pistons, are 1 piece. When a 1 piece gasket is used the o-ring groove is filled with silicone.

Interesting... two piece head gaskets. I must be really cynical because the first thing I thought of was:

"Wow.... how much would the dealer charge for THOSE?"

The earliest Z1s came with a one piece head gasket but Kaw changed to a two-piece and cam chain well oring probably in late 73 or 74 (can't recall for sure) to provide a better seal.

Now I understand! The talk about a 2 piece head gasket had me thinking it was one piece on top of another piece....

This kind makes more sense.

The Clymer manual says: To install the cylinder head on a 1974 or later engine, lay 2 new cylinder head gaskets (left and right are the same)on the cylinder block, with the wider crimped edges facing up. Place the O-Ring in the groove between the 2 gaskets.
