I didnt need to remove the sprocket to change my shift shaft seal.
But if you still have the chain connected to the back tire have a buddy step on the rear brakes while you use a breaker bar and correct size socket.

so you can remove it without removing the small cover?

Ok i just went out and looked and yeah i see the cover you are referring to and no i did not have to remove it. I simply used a tool (which im not sure of its correct name?) but it looks like a pointy screwdriver that has a 90 degree angle at the end that looks similiar to an Italian wish charm.
Unless the last owner of your bike glued it in it should just pop right out with the right tool! Mine did and i had to work fast in gettin the new one back on because it was dumping my 8 dollar a quart new oil all over the place !lol
One smart thing i did before i popped the old one off was to thoroughly clean the shifter shaft with brake cleaner and a rag.Because i would have lost alot more oil trying to clean it before putting the new seal back on.

FWIW if you remove the whole cover you are gonna need a new gasket for that and while your at it you may as well change the countershaft seal as well.
Hope this helps?

That does help a lot. I orderd both seals and the gasket in anticipation of removing the cover. but I will do it the way that you did and save the other pieces until I actually do need them. Thanks for the help.

I'm trying to remove my shift shaft seal but it's not coming out. Is the seal made of just rubber? I'm not sure if i'm prying on the right thing. Around where the shaft goes in, there something metal that looks pressed in.
The service manual does not reference on how to get the seal
out.

Thanks

Thanks SPARKY! That helps! I've been trying to pry on it for a little but it's in pretty tight. If it's glued how can I get it out? Should I use heat?

Thanks;)

It shouldnt be glued. I used the sharp ends of a couple of bent nails goin in at an angle underneath the lip.[Anything with a sharp hook does it] You'll see when you get it out that theres quite a gap between the edge of the metal and the rubber inside it.
It'll just be jammed in there.
Just hoik it out but try not to mark the shaft.
Best of Luck!
