Quick question because I don't know where to go with figuring out this problem for my 1982 KZ750N1 Spectre.
I recently took off my head to EDM out a broken exhaust stud on #3. This went great and I was able to put a new stud in just fine. As I remember, the EDM did a perfect job.
I put the head back on with a new head gasket, reshimed all the valves to .12 mm dead on, and used all new exhaust copper gaskets. I removed the smog stuff and put a piece of hose between the two ports on the front of the head where the smog used to connect. I had also dropped the exhaust and mufflers and cleaned them all up.
Before I did this work, I was getting nearly 55 mpg. Now, I get the fuel like after 30 miles. That's ~10 mpg??? Also, I have a blackish oil discharge out the 3/4 muffler that was not there before.
I have checked compression on and all cylinders are spec. I have used new spark plugs and checked the timing. I had cleaned the carbs and checked the fuel level today. A mm or two high, but still below the mating surface by 2 mm on both #3 and #4. Having checked all the usual suspects, I'm looking for what to check next.
I don't know if the discharge and the terrible mileage are related, but I going to assume there are since they appeared at the same time.
I didn't seem to be burning or spewing any oil, it was still full. I drained the oil today for a change and will fill it to the full mark tomorrow and watch it closely. The drained oil had no discernible smell of gasoline, so I don't think it when to the crankcase.
Ideas?

Good question. How do the plugs read?

Possibly valve seals for the discharge. You removed the smog pump, could be the reason for the change in milage.

Here we go again with the invisible smog pump
The smog removal had exactly zero to do with any drop in mileage, same effect it has on performance.
It's pretty obvious you are pumping fuel out number 3 or 4 (if not both) cylinder. 10 mpg means you are pumping an awful lot of fuel through one or two cylinders, and I'm going to guess that it's just one. I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that you left a part out of one of your carbs. Either #3 or #4 spark plug ought to be wet with fuel, so pull them out and see which plug it is, then pull the corresponding carb apart and see what part is missing.
If WG was here he could probably tell you exactly what part you left out, but I'm going to guess that it was the main jet.

prize goes to steeel
dropped the #4 bowl and the secondary main jet had unscrewed itself and was sitting at the bottom, leaving a gaping huge unmetered fuel passageway to #4.

Logical thinking, it's a character flaw I'm well known for
Ever notice that I don't post much in the body work and paint forum? That's because I don't have an artistic side, without logic I'm lost
