I have a 97 kz1000p and it has a clattering sound at takeoff and if I go slowly around a corner. the engine stutters at the same time. it sounds as if I have a timing chain smacking the case or 1 valve WAY out of adjustment. it'll almost stall on takeoff the bike if i don't ease the gas and feather the clutch.

Is the timing chain adjustable manually or is it self adjusting?

Is the valve lash screw and lock nut style or is it one of the moronic bucket and shim deals?

Anyone have the proper specs for valve lash?

I don't want to crack it open until I know I have everything ready to do the job. I hate postponing after I start a job because I need parts or a tool I don't already own

The first and most important tool you need is a manual.

It has bucket and shim.

Auto cam chain adjuster, manual one is available at APE.

Figures. I'll be Doing a full head rebuild along with it then since i have a slight valve stem seal leak in the left bank anyhow.

probably do the manual adjuster and a new chain at the same time. along with new guides and seals. depending on how long i wait to have it up again I might just have the jugs polished and the edges jewel cut aswell. living i vegas the extra cooling could help a bit.
