crankshaft cam chain teeth? was created by sbjones
i have been doing some research. i have found that the 900 cranks (some i think) have 15 teeth on the crank for the cam chain.
my question is this. does a '77 kz1000 crank have 15 or 16 teeth on the crank?
i am trying to figure out if i can put a 900 crank in my '77 1000.
i have been told that i could do this, but then i found the different teeth numbers for the cam chains.
let me know ,
thanks!!!

All the Z1 and KZ900 engines use a 15 tooth 'porkchop' crank - these cranks are relatively light (by comparision) and have 30 tooth cam sprockets.
The all 1977 and 78 KZ1000's use a full flywheel crank with 15 tooth crank - these cranks are heavy suckers - great torque, slower revving. Totally interchangeable with the Z1/KZ900. However, the rotor attachment bolt thread changed in 1978 from 8mm to 10mm.
In 1979 and 1980 it gets more confusing. The Mk II motors use a 16 tooth crank with 32 tooth cam sprockets. The Mk II motors were in the 1979 & 80 KZ1000-A3 & A4, the 1980 KZ1000-B4, the 1980 & 1981 KZ1000-C3 & C4 police bikes, the 1980 KZ1000-D3 (Z1R), the 1979 & 1980 KZ1000-E1 & E2 shaft bikes, and the KZ1000-G1 (Z1 Classic). Note they are not in the 1979 KZ1000-B3 LTD model.
The 1979 & 1980 models use a different stator/rotor arrangement.

so if i read that corretly jeff. an earlier 900 crank ('77 and earlier) will drop right into my '77 1000 engine ? and be lighter and rev up faster.

If your 77 is or was a running motor, just count the teeth on the cam sprocket and that will tell you which crank sprocket you have.

If the motor has a good ported head, it will be a rocket with 435s.
