Question on cam timing / degreeing was created by 79MKII
Do you guys know if the cams will have to be degreed again after disassembly and reassembly? If all of the same parts are used (except gaskets), and the slotted sprockets weren't moved, wouldn't it be OK? I'm asking about head and cylinder removal / installation.

I guess the gasket thickness could throw it off, but let's assume they are the same as the originals.

I spent a LOT of time setting my cams last winter and might be tearing down the motor again this winter. Would I have to re do everything??

I did the same thing...degreed my cams, and then tore the engine down the next winter. No problems.Put it all back together like it was and good to go.
Ya,as long as you didn't loosen off the bolts that hold the sprockets on the cams, then you can just go ahead and set them up as you normally would.Chances are that the factory arrows that you use to set the cams, will not be perfectly flush to the head(because you degreed them)so don't let that confuse you in the process.
Maybe while you have the cams out, check to make sure the sprocket bolts are still tight.;)

I would think that it would change a little, like you said gasket thickness, etc, but I dont think you would notice the small change

If u are using the same manufacturers gaskets they will be the same. cometics are about .043" thick after compression. a couple thow wont matter. even if the lobe center is off a degree u wont notice.and im sure u checkeD all of your clearances before (RIGHT?)so U WONT HAVE ANY TROUBLE.

Thanks for the replies. I think I might try to carefully reassemble everything as is this winter and see what happens. I'll be sure to order the same gaskets too.

Yes, clearances were all set prior to setting cams. That brings up another question though. Does valve wear (changing clearance) affect cam timing very much?
