how to clean used parts was created by jammor
I bought used pistons and cylinders and a head and am wondering do I need to pay the shop to bead blast the carbon off them or can I just use a wire brush and degreaser? Someone suggested I bake the parts in the oven once they are clean. I think he said to do that so the gasket mating surfaces will be clean enough to bond. Can't I just do a final wipe off with acetone to clean the mating surfaces? Any advice is appreciated. 1978 kz750twin

I've used carburetor cleaner and steel wool/brushes with good results. Do not remove any aluminum. Make sure the mating surfaces are flat and acetone will work fine for final cleaing. I don't like to use glass beading anymore, worried about getting all the media off/out of the castings/forgings. My 0.02 cents worth. Ride safe, Steve

Simple green. Don't leave the aluminum in more that a few hours.
