connecting rod cap direction was created by keyzerdm
I am rebuilding my 1978 KZ650C, and I found that 3 of the rod caps were put on so that the bearings were "tang-to-tang" and one had the tangs opposite. Which way is correct?
Thanks,
Dave

Unless you're replacing the bearings, I wouldn't worry about it.
They've worn in the way they are and changing them around may cause faster wear.

Did I miss something?
We're talking about the tangs. These are the notches on the rod end and cap that the bearing tab fits into.
Or am I picturing this wrong?
The hole is cut with the cap on the rod.
Any error in center translates to offset when the cap is put on backwards.
This makes a high spot on each bearing at the seam.
If he's been runnng a while this high spot has worn down and the bearing is nice and round inside.
If he keeps the old bearings and turns the caps around he gets two new low spots.
Turning the caps around if the bearings don't need replacing buys nothing but trouble.

Thanks for the help. I am replacing the bearings so I will put them all tang to tang. I may have put the cap on backwards after I removed the rod, although I thought I was careful. I guess next time I will be sure to mark them all before removing them . . .
