650 camshaft setup was created by Aesop
I have 77 650D and replaced the bottom end with a 82 csr650 engine. I used the 77 head, but the cam chain is different, so I am using the 82 cams. Now I am stumped. The cam sprocket markings are very different, and there is no sprocket between the cams. I have searched this forum but came up empty. I am @ 1-4 TDC, but the cams have too much garbage printed on them.

What is the correct setup? Don't want to bend valves. Thanx.

First off, are you using the 82 cam cover also?

Secondly, what marks are on the cam sprockets?

I haven't seen the 82 cam sprockets, so I'm wondering of they use the same sprockets as the 750.

I think you'll have to use the 82 head also. In 81 the kz650 switched to a hyvo cam chain that used different guides and tensioners internally. The pre-81 heads are going to have mounting points for the earlier model tensioners (including the top one you mentioned), which aren't there in the post-81 models.

The exhaust cam has these numbers stamped in the sprocket
Z7EX (with a line underneath)
IN (below a hole)
Z6EX (with a line underneath)
Z7EX (below a hole)
IN (with a line underneath)
Z7EX

Does the IN with a line underneath line up with the edge of the valvecover surface? the old style chain sprockets had arrows.

Just got home or I would have told you earlier that those are the same sprockets used on the 750 fours.

If you decide not to take it to a shop, you can download a 750 manual HERE and follow the instructions to set the cam timing.
