KZ900 Oil Light - Input/experience Needed - Please was created by Ilbikes
Guys,
I put thousands of miles on my roommate's 1976 KZ900 32-33 years ago. I remember hard, full-throttle shifts between 1st and 2nd would get the oil light illuminated. I have just put my KZ900 back together after the new rings/Swain Tech pistons, and hone and started the break-in process. After 50 miles I've started making a few hard pulls to build full pressure in the cylinders so the rings aren't glazed before seating as the original owner did. I'm getting an oil light illuminating under hard accell in 1st - without the hard shift. Is this consistent and common for the stock KZ900? What about the modifieds - they would be slamming the oil to the rear of the cases even in higher gears?
I read years ago how RC Engineering would move the pick-up back and there are others who have modified the pan. My question is whether this is common among stock bikes and does anyone have a solution short of re-routing the pick-up?
Thanks in advance.
Gordon

Some members have noted that under certain circumstances oil in the bottom of the engine will be pushed to the back of the oil pan and away from the oil pump input/screen. This apparently starves the oil pump and naturally the pump's output pressure falls.
I have seen posts describing a very simple modification that blocks the oil from being pushed to the back of the oil pan during hard acceleration.
This may be the cause of your low oil pressure under hard acceleration symptom. You will want to act accordingly or implement the modification.
Best of success.
Here it is... an "MTC-Oil Pan Gate" at less that $20...

Is this the original oil pump in your bike and did you change to oil as scheduled? (not every 6 months) the oil pump may be wearing out.

Ya,you can install what's called an "Oil-Pan Gate".
I looked around, but can't find any info for you.
Someone else will jump in soon...
