There is oil inside the stator cover... not too much but you might want to drain the oil... If you have a centerstand, it won't be much oil at all and you might be able to get away without draining the oil.
The plug can be had in the aftermarket. www.z1enterprises.com sells them. Tell Jeff which bike you have as the 900 and early 1015cc engines with the different type stator had a somewhat different plug. I buy one from him for every engine rebuild I do and make a new plug a part of the rebuild.

FWIW Methanol makes cleanup easier wth shellac based gasket sealers.
Methylene Chloride works too but it will take the paint off faster than brake fluid...

Steve Saunders got back to me from Z1enterprises.
He sent me this link: www.z1enterprises.com/detail.aspx?ID=373
...but said they weren't 100% sure it fit the 79-80s.
Can anyone verify this?

I have been using this method myself for many years. Unless its an old tractor, then i had to make my own valve cover gaskets from my old leather belt (or a second hand store belt).
Sometimes if i have to I will use RTV, but I will lay it out overnight on seran wrap or Waxed paper and let it cure (Making a lifetime gasket) then replacing the parts.
ive used the copper filled sealant as well. Like on lawnmower engine head gaskets.
I have used grease in the past to hold gaskets in place. It doesn't do any harm.
