Spark Plug Repair for KZ900-A4 was created by DoubleDub
I'm looking at using the Heli-Coil 5334-14 kit, but I have two plug chambers that need repair - one is stripped and the other is cross-threaded.

Has anyone used the Heli-Coil Sav-A-Thread solid insert kits? Does anyone know if I would need a Short, Normal, or Long insert? (as I have to order a separate insert for the second spark plug chamber - the kit comes with all three)

Thanks for the help!

Can't recall the tool name, but there's a re-threader that works from the deep end of the spark plug hole. Could correct the cross-thread situation. Good Luck! :)

Thanks - I found this one: KD Tools 3379

I'll check around local stores and see if I can find something similar to try before using the insert.

I just was looking for someone's opinion on the Sav-A-Thread method. I hear a lot of people complaining about spark plugs pulling out after using inserts, but I wasn't sure if this was the standard thread repair kits or the spark plug specific kits like the one I listed.

I would prefer the reverse tap method where feasible to resolve a cross-thread situation.

14mm reverse tap

Good Luck! :)

Thats pretty cool, never even heard of it. Put some grease on it and it might even pull the metal out with it. In the future use antisieze and dont take them out when the motors hot

Is there anything about the inside threads of the spark plug chamber that would prevent me from trying this with a 14mmx1.25 bolt before trying the rethreading tool?

I prefer using Timesert and Bigsert (made by Timesert) for thread repair. Helicoil uses a coil of wire thats like a tightly coiled spring but Timesert uses a solid piece of metal. They also have a better locking system to prevent them from coming out after being installed. There are other advantages like the type material the insert is made from but you can read all about that on there site or where they are sold.

The Sav-A-Thread set looks to be a solid insert - not a coil.
