Cam Cover Clearance?? was created by 79MKII
How much do I need to remove from a stock valve cover for .425 cams? Just the crosses on the intake side or is there more to do?

How do I check it? I'm guessing by installing the cover and turning it over by hand? Can I hear the contact that way?

This is on the '79MKII project.

Thanks

That the way I do it.
I think you will have to remove just a little more then the crosses
if I remember correctly.
Your doing it right. I don't think there is a wrong way to do it.

I saw on another forum that if you need just a tad more clearence after you removed the "X"s use two gaskets.

Definitely not stock - 1260 kit with ported head, o/s valves, mild porting, etc, etc, etc... Head was clearanced for cams as was old cam cover. I'm switching cam covers to a freshly chromed one and want to make sure I have enough clearance for the .425's.

Is the exhaust side OK as is? My old one has some material ground off from intake and exhaust but is that necessary? I had .435 cams in it at one time with a single gasket and never had any problems. I've heard from some that you only need to remove the crosses and you're OK - just looking for some confirmation on that.
Don't want to beat up my new cams!!

Just remove the crosses on int and xht is a good start but never leave anything to chance. after the x's are ground off, put the lobes up and put a peice of putty on top. tighten down the cover , then temove the cover and measure the thickness of the putty . now u know where u stand . No guessing.
Your motor sounds like mine, but i just went from 1135cc to 1327 cc's.

I finally tried out the new cover and had enough clearance. I ground off all of the "crosses" and just cleaned up the exhaust side to be safe. I only used one gasket (as I always had in the past) and it was around 1mm thick. Kicked it over first and listened for noise, then started it, then rode it.

Here's a picture before chrome plating:
