top cam chain dampers
08 Jul 2008 20:06
I have a 77' KZ1000.
Is the cam chain idler supposed to have any movement after tightening down? Mine are tight but if I apply pressure on the idler it rocks a hair. I have the valve cover off to adjust valve clearance and wabt to know if the two dampers need replaced.
Thanks

Are you talking about the top tower?
There will be a tad of movement there, but if it's sloppy, get rid of it now.
Rereading your post, are you saying that the top tower BRACKET moves when it's tightened down?

Yes its the top tower. The dampers actually look pretty new but just a hair of movement. Based on wjat you just said I think I am fine.

If it's the sprocket that has a bit of play, that's one thing, but if it's the bracket that has movement, that's NOT good.
Which is it?

You have brand NEW dampners?
Doesn't make sense, why you can't tighten that tower down.
What do the 4 bolts look like...can you post a pic of the whole thing,or at least the bolts and what type of head on the bolts.
I wonder if maybe a P.O. used longer bolts at one time,or even the wrong tower...one from a different model KZ.

Hey Sandy,
Sorry for the confusion but what I meant was I have a brand new set uninstalled that i could put in. I noticed that my sprocket has some play too but they want between 80 and 100+ for a new one from Z1. I hope ht elittle play i see is normal for the sprocket. I am going to replace the dampers though.
