How to Identify a kz650 engine? was created by dfcm2003
Hi all,

Im new here, and I just purchased 2 kz650 engines. I am planning on using one of them in a Golf Cart, yet I have no idea which model of engines they are? I was wondering if anyone here could help me figure out what model they are?

I looked all over the engines and I found this on both.

0652l (im assuming its an l, it looks like a cursive l)
and Made in Japan

I have all the parts for the engines, the main blocks are together, but I have to place the carbs on etc..

I have a bunch of extra parts as well. I need to purchase a manual but I have no idea on which manual to get.

Also: one motor looks to have points, and the other an electrical point system?

Thanks for help and time.

OK, you should be able to find the VIN on top of the case, on the right side, above the clutch, facing up. Check out the VIN lookup function on www.cyclepartsnation.com to tell you what years they are and get the right manual.

The 0652 is for the 652cc engine size, as for the "L" that symbol on mine is in reference to the oil volume, not engine size.

Originally the engines were made with point ignition. Later after market parts like the Dyna S ignition system have replaced many OEM points.

Hope this helps.

77-80 had points, 81 and later had electronic ignition and no kickstart.

Should say something like KZ550BEXXXXXX on a flat pad right above and behind the kickstart lever.

XXXXXX will be numbers.
