Correct use of a Reamer[valve guide] was created by SPARKY47
Hi Guys, help please, I'd like to know if it's bad practice to WITHDRAW a reamer out of a valve guide or should it only go in one direction and come out the other end?
All replies appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Interesting question.
All my life I have always withdrawn it from the same end that I put it into.
I was trained by a classical German Technician --"You vill only do it this way" --and as anal as he was I am sure that is correct.
The handle on the reamer would tend to support that technique.

well the first question, what type of guide, the reamers normally used travel from one end to the other, if you pull it back up, the flutes will hold removed material and possible damage to the guide would result,
The best way is to hone the guides to the proper size, the finish is better,
you want to make sure the clearances are checked all the way down the guide

Reaming guides is stone age. Hone them after installation.

BSKZ650. Thankyou very much, I'd never had anything to do with a reamer previously so your input is valued.
Just a bit puzzled why ol ma kawa would provide a special tool [ 57001-1079 ]REAMER,VALVE GUIDE.
Or, has technology moved on?:silly:

Thanks Jay, first engine rebuild so a learning curve from hell:unsure:
I've got a guide with 3 cracks visible and the hole LOOKS oval, next pita is getting the thing out.No specialist services in this part of the woods so I have to work it out and do it myself...
My only knowledge of honing is with regard to cylinder bores where the provision of oilways[scratches in the walls]is a requirement.
So what is the difference in surface finish between reaming and honing a valve guide?

reaming guides is the older method, but its still used, the tool you refer to is probably a reamer for the guides when they are replaced.
as I read your post, it looks to me a s you are wanting to replace the guide yourself?, when you change the guide you must regrind the seat and the valve, which should include all of the valves, not something for the first timer to do, you need to get a shop to do the work for you.
