Sprocket spacer "collar" stuck?
25 Jun 2008 04:24
Is the sprocket spacer on the output shaft a press fit, or is mine just frozen? The parts diagrams refers to part as a "collar", and it rides in the oil seal in the transmission cover.
Anyway, it's frozen in place and it needs to come off before I can replace the big bearing behind it. Any suggestions for removal?

The collar is a slight press fit and i suggest getting another one in case this one is damaged during removal. I've removed this collar with a bearing spliter and puller and i've also used an air hammer gently to remove it. Using the air hammer with either a punch or chisel will remove it but it also damages the collar. Either way get a spare collar in case it gets nicked.

Try putting it in the freezer for 24hr.
Then use a brass drift. It's worked for me in the past.
I have also used hose clamps (Two) one over the other and used a bearing
puller. It must be the hillrod in me.

I'm going to try the freezer trick. It's in now, and I'll pull it out tomorrow evening and try heating the collar with a torch. With any luck it will pop off with a minimum of effort. I'm not too worried about nicking it, as it needs to be replaced. The associated oil seal (which is also being replaced) had deteriorated and worn a groove into the collar.

Done. The freezer/torch combo seemed to work, though it still required a little BFH-ing.
Thanks all for the help!
